In this chapter, we will review ways and techniques to search & find a low EMF house. It might take time, you might see more than 50 houses, but if you do it correctly, in the end, you will find a low EMF house.

The need to find a low EMF house

Most of us move to a new house once in few years. During the search, most people take into account different subjects like population density, noise, building quality, number of neighbors, nearby schools, nearby services, nearby roads, public transportation, the nature of the neighborhood and many more parameters.
If you are aware of EMF health effects, or if you are an EHS person, it is only logical that you will take into consideration also the ELF and RF levels while searching for a new house.

It is important to emphasize that in many cases in which your current house has RF and ELF levels, we recommend first to try and do every possible step in order to measure the EMF levels, find the cause, fix it or use EMF protection in order to block the EMF (mainly RF) from coming into the current house. Searching for a new house is complicated. The move itself is expensive and inconvenient. Usually, if you harry to leave your current house over EMF levels issues, without even trying to improve the EMF situation there, it is very likely that you run into similar issues, sooner or later in your new house.

Steps that will increase the chance your new home will be low EMF

  1. Use local maps with cell tower locations to check the proximity of cell phone towers to your new house.
  2. Use Google Street service to check if there is a line of sight from your new house to any cell phone tower, radio/TV active antenna, Airport, Seaports, Army bases, Power lines, Utility infrastructure, and other possible sources of RF and ELF-EMF.
  3. Use a Home Use EMF Meter to check the RF and ELF levels inside the new house and around it(in-house appliances, neighbors, outside). Repeat the tests at different hours of the day and night and on different days of the week (and weekends)
  4. Use Dirty Electricity meter to check the Dirty Electricity levels and to try to allocate the reasons and sources.
  5. Make sure that the Electric Utility meter is not wireless and does not emit high RF levels.
If it is a wireless smart meter make sure it is as far as possible from your house/apartment, especially the bedrooms. Make sure it can be protected so less or no RF radiation from it will enter the house. Check if it is possible to “option out” and go back to a non-radiating meter. Make sure no other smart meters are installed on your house walls.
  6. Make sure that the water utility meter is not wireless. If it is wireless make sure that the radiation level emitted from it is not too bad, make sure it is far enough from the house so it will have no influence over the house, especially bedrooms, and keep a safe distance from it (usually 2 meters will be OK to most people).
  7. Check the grounding system in the house.
If the Neutral and the Ground are shortcutted together, there might be a need to fix it (depending on the grounding methods in your country).
  8. Make sure there are no magnetic fields on the ground wires and water pipes.
  9. Make sure that the electric power cables that enter into the house and to the power cabinets are not located under/near beds or sitting areas.

Basic principles

  1. With fewer people living in the neighborhood, less chance for more new cell phone towers in the near future.
  2. Fewer neighbors in the same building, less RF and ELF radiation coming from their equipment.
  3. As less as possible cell phone towers around, the less RF from the environment.
  4. No direct view to cell phone towers = less RF coming from outside, and less the chance of needing RF protection to block it.
  5. As far as possible from radio/TV active antenna, Airport, Seaports, Army bases, Power lines, Utility infrastructure, and other possible sources of RF and ELF-EMF.
  6. As much as possible vegetation around the house (watch out for the fire hazard, but green plants block RF very nicely)
  7. As far as possible from power lines and electric voltage transformers.
  8. Check the EMF safety levels and our recommendations on the standards’ page.
  9. If the RF levels are higher than 0.04 mW/m2, try to assess if and how much it will cost to use RF protection in order to bring the levels below this level.
  10. If there are high ELF levels from a power cabinet or the electricity infrastructure inside the house (and the electric meter),  try to assess if and how much it will cost to use RF protection in order to bring the levels below this level.

Special notice to EHS people

lots of EHS people that contact me tell me that they what to find a new low EMF house. I always try to remind them that it is not so simple to find a low EMF house and it requires knowing the different types of EMF, being able to measure all types of EMF, knowing which levels are reasonable for you, knowing when, where and how it is possible to use protection. When you have only a few minutes to see a house you need to must the art of measuring EMF (both RF, LF Magnetic, LF Electric field, & Dirty electricity) in order to get the right impression.

Therefore I strongly suggest not jumping and packing your things before you mastered the list of abilities and knowledge listed above. I recommend first try to adjust your house, to reduce the emission in it, keep a safe distance from the ELF-EMF source, and to remove all RF emitting devices. if possible try to use EMF protection. If you still using a cell phone, consider reducing the use dramatically. Get and learn to use an EMF meter before you embark on the quest of finding a low EMF house.

Most important points for EHS:

  1. Prefer a privet/single house.
  2. Try to sleep over in the house before obligating.
  3. It is recommended that a CORNET meter will show in the house RF levels no larger than 0.0005 mW/m2 in RF mode.
  4. It is recommended that an ELF magnetic field meter will show in the house levels of below 2mG.
  5. Check for mold in the house/air condition system.

Finding a low EMF house in Israel

I live in Israel. I lived here all my life.

The cities are full of cell towers, and the border areas are full of military bases and their communications towers.

There are still low EMF places, in small towns and villages. Usually in privet houses, surrounded by trees, with no cell towers or military base, air posts, and sea ports in eye view.

You need to get to know the country and then use your EMF meter to find the low EMF houses, in relative (but not perfect) low EMF town, neighborhoods or villages.

Please knot that compared to other countries, Israel is very small. So you won’t find vast inhabited plains, or forests just waiting for EHS people to come and build a house. Everything is packed close together and you can build only in known and existing cities/villages.

I myself live in Zichron Yaakov, kind of between Haifa and Tel-Aviv. It is a small 25K people town. My house is surrounded by trees, with no cell tower at eye view. There are no army bases, sea posts or air ports around (yet).
