International call for revoking the ICNIRP’s mandate and for better standards

A call for better protective standards, and revoking the mandate of ICNIRP is made by more than 244 scientists from around the world after ICNIRP ports its draft for updates on it’s Radiofrequency so-called safety standards (a quick look reveals nothing is changed, the standards are still note protective of humans, protective of the industry and are based only on heat effect of the radiation).

The letter will be sent to the WHO – World Health Organisation.

The ICNIRP does it again – rejecting the finding of NTP and Ramzini studies that RF radiation may cause and promote cancer.

Microwave news report that ICNIRP has released an 8-page note that tries to explain why these studies’ findings will not affect the old, non-protective standard for RF exposure.
By that ICNIRP proves once again that the role it chose to play is to protect the industry from any update of the easy-to-follow, non-protective RF exposure guidelines. These non-protective guidelines were written in 1998, that don’t cover health and biological damage from RF exposure and that take into consideration only immediate damage from the rise of temperature due to RF exposure.

The trick they use is repeated every once in a while when a new study finds evidence that RF radiation exposure can cause or promote cancer or damage health in any other way.
They use the magic words: “inconsistent” and ” unreliable”  to undermine the findings while accepting and promoting studies that show a safer picture, even if proven wrong (for example the Danish cohort study)

ICNIRP prove itself once again as inadequate, biased, and irrelevant.

Therefore I suggest changing “ICNIRP” name to “ICNIRIP”.
It is a small change that will bring more “reliability” to the group.

5G might radiate more than the non-protective exposure standards.

A post in Lennart Hardell’s blog about a presentation given by Ericsson about the “challenge in meeting safety standards during 5G deployment”.
In it’s presentation (link in the post), Ericsson gives an estimation of the radiation emission from 2 of it’s infrastructure products (antenna), one at 3.5GHz, the other a 28GHz. 
Ericsson claims that the current ICNIRP (non-protective, heat-based, “good for the industry” ) standards are going to make the deployment difficult. 
I am afraid that now the industry will put pressure to allow even less protective standards to comply with the need for faster, cheaper, easier deployment of 5G.
It is very sad that the industry still thinks it can save money by exposing the public to more radiation, instead of developing their products and infrastructure in such a way that will reduce users’ and the public’s exposure.

“Risk conception of WIFI and RF on Israeli public and media” – Study and conference 02-2019

On the last Sunday, the 10/02/2019 I took part of a conversion in Tel Aviv Center for Science Education (HEMDA – Schwartz-Reisman Science Education Center – http://www.hemda.org.il/). The reason for this conversion was a study on the Conception of the risk from wireless radiation by the public and in particular of the risk from WIFI infrastructure in schools. The study was funded by the Ministry of Technology and Science in Israel. The Study was set to examine the conception of the risk from wireless radiation and WIFI routers in the public the the influence of the Media, mainly TV over the public conception of the risk, and the way this conception appears on the online media. The researchers said again and again that this is not a study on the risk but on it’s conception by the public and appearance on the Israeli media and TV.
It is important to note that the organizers of the convention knew who I am and what my views are and since the conference was opened to the public they did not block me from taking part.

The study

From reading the study, and the article about it in the press, it is very clear that the opinion of the study team is that there is no possibility that RF radiation can cause damage or health risks.
The Conference itself also started according to this concept and according to it, until it was revealed that it might not be the case.
The climate in the conference was that the Television media was to blame for the misconception of the risk from EMF in the public eye. In particular, one show from 2016, took fire ( I took part in this TV article alongside other EHS people, activists, and scientists, please see with English CC at – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpJsIWuV-PA&feature=youtu.be).  This TV article had a big echo in Israel, and lots of EHS people understood the source of their pain and contacted me and other members of the Israeli EHS community to seek help and support.

I see the study and the conference as an attempt to do 2 things:
1. Put pressure on the media not to broadcast more Tv articles about EMF risk, cell phone risk, WIFI risk and EHS.
2. Make a point that there is no possible health effect to EMF exposure (once again) and to put those that argue that there is in a shady light.

ENG Moshe Netzer

The conference started with the lecture of ENG Moshe Netzer, who is a leading Israeli Radiation specialist who has worked in this field for more than 40 years and is regarded as one of the top professionals in the technical field of EMF measurement and protection. It was very clear from his lecture that Moshe does not support the possibility that EMF can push any danger in the low levels of WIFI. He did, however, admit in a way that it is almost impossible to measure WIFI in classes, but he linked that to the low level of the radiation and not to the use of slow RF meters with 2-5 samples each second.
Eng. Netzer also told the crowd that he was able to convince a local city council to install WIFI routers in schools when he presented them with the very low levels of RF measured from WIFI routers.

PhD Uri Lerner

The next lecture was from PhD Uri Lerner about the precautionary principle, and about the possibility that warning the public might cause more damage than the polluter itself (Nocebo effect).

Prof’ Stelian Gelberg

The next lecture was by Prof’ Stelian Gelberg about the approach and way that the Ministry of Environment Protection handles this issue. Prof’ Stelian is the head of the Radiation and Noise Department in the Ministry of Environmental Protection in Israel. Prof’ Stelian said in the past, to a Knesset committee that non-ionizing radiation can cause biological damage but in his lecture, there was almost no sign of this understanding. Those with a good ear could find some clues to that in their answers to the open questions.

PhD graduate Keren Daliot

The next lecture was by PhD graduate Keren Daliot who conducted the study. He lecture was on the study and the results. Again it was clear that the study was done based on the assumption that WIFI radiation and RF radiation can cause not health effects.

Expert Panel

At this point, the lecture part of the night was over and the panel members were introduced and took their sit on the stage. The panel was hosted by Miss Sivan Klingbail from the TV show “Osut Hesbon” (“Making the Math” a TV consumer show that did several reports of EMF and cell phone radiation last few years). The guest speakers were Prof Barak Fishbain, Prof’ Ayelet Barnea-Tzubery, the journalist Aviv Lavi (who did several articles on EMF and EHS in the last few years), and Miss Hadas Wagman from Tnuda (who should be working closely with Prof’ Sigal Sedesky),

At the beginning of the panel, it looked as if it is more of a tribunal judging the media about airing TV reports about EMF health risks and EHS. Most of the fire was aimed to the Ch2 from 2016 which got the popolistic name “How are we killing ourselves: Radiation” (please see link above).  I see this criticism as an attempt to put pressure on the TV media not to bring forward future reports about the possible health risks of EMF and about EHS. I think that EHS in particular creates a lot of anger in people who don’t believe there can be any health risk to RF or EMF.  If our condition is caused by exposure to EMF, it can be the prof they would not like to see, so they put the Nocebo effect as the cause of EHS and try to fight back when we try to warn others. 

The panel, as the lectures before it, seemed to conduct the discussion under the assumption that there is no chance that EMF , RF or WIFI can cause a health risk.  This was suddenly interrupted when Journalist Aviv Lavi said “But this is not what Sidesky said”. Lavi said that he had a lot of time with Sidesky during several interviews he did with her and that he had heard her say that there might be a risk, that we still don’t know how it is caused or how much the risk, that there is a debate about the possible risk and that giving a cell phone to a child is child abuse.  This view of Prof’ Sedisky was brought to the public several times during TV Interviews with her (for example here – https://youtu.be/IVvfDNlZoaw?t=96 and here – https://news.walla.co.il/item/2965687 both in Hebrew).

From here on the discussion continued with that in mind. I think that this remark by Aviv Lavy stopped the attacks made on the media and the discussion moved to what we can do to reduce the exposure. 

Open Questions

On the open question part, we (me and 2 other EHS/activists and one nonEHS activist) asked questions. My question to Prof’ Ayelet Barnea-Tzubery was “do you think your position that there is no possible risk to EMF exposure, which we now understand is not the opinion of all the scientists in this field,  influenced the data gathering and processing in this study”,  she answered a quick “No, we had to people examining the data in a binary way” , I replied “yes but both believe there is no risk.

The other activist also asked questions. 

At the end of the panel discussion, the host asked Prof’ Stelian Gelberg to answer “Yes” or “No” to the question can she sleep with no worries about the WIFI use in schools. He paused for a few seconds and then gave a short lecture about the ministry activity in ELF-M, RF from mobile phone masts, and WIFI in schools, closing it up with “of course”. I understand his answers as “we are doing what we can”.

The conclusion of the study, as appears in the abstract is :

Our findings support the accumulating evidence that cellular telephone use under usual conditions does not increase brain tumor incidence.

A deeper look inside the data, in the first table, exposure the main flow in the study:

• The “heavy users” group consisted of women who talked max of 45 minutes a week on their cell phone ( average was 20 minutes/week, lowest was 10 minutes/week), for 10 years. This is very low usage.
• Only about half of the wemen that took part in the original study took part in the follow up.

In addition, it seems that Subjects were not asked about their cordless phone (which emits the same radiation and that was very popular in the years of the study) usage.

These industries are protected by the high nonprotective, heat-based RF exposure standards of the FCC and ICNIRP. Both are for devices and infrastructure. Both the FCC(US) and ICNIRP (EU and most of the rest of the world) base their standards on the assumption that other than heat, there is no possible known health effect to RF radiation.

Recently, the FCC standard for RF exposure was recently called out by the D.C. circuit court as ” arbitrary and capriciousin  ” when rolling in the case of EHT and CHD against the FCC. the court also noted that “The Commission failed to provide a reasoned explanation for its determination that its guidelines adequately protect against the harmful effects of exposure to radiofrequency radiation unrelated to cancer.”.

This rolling was not given in a vacuum, as from one side the industry is racing for the fast deployment of 5G, the development of 6G, and the introduction of new smartphones, “small cells” antenna, new WIFI-6, ZigBee, and many other new wireless communication standards, technologies and products. On the other side of reality, more and more studies show that RF Radiation can cause biological changes that can lead to health effects, in RFR levels far below the so-called “safety standards”. In addition to the studies that are done in the theoretical and experimental academic ivory towers, here in the ‘new-smart-wireless-cellular world’, more and more people are becoming sick because of RFR exposure.

I got hurt in 2004. Back then I could feel the RFR from my cell phone after 20-40 seconds, but I was generally OK when going down the street, being around people with smartphones, and driving the roads. But as the deployment of 3G networks and the adoption of smartphone and WIFI routers and devices grew, my sensitivity to RFR worsen and came to a stage I could not be around people with smartphones, WIFI routers, or 100 meters from a cell tower (could not walk the streets or drive my car on the highway) without symptoms. For a year and a half, I struggled until learning to cope with this new condition, learning about RFF, how to measure it, how to reduce exposure, and how to protect from it.

Since then I have recovered slowly, but not completely. I left the Hi-Tech industry in 2013, and started to devote all my time to building awareness to RFR and Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitivity (EHS), or as it was called before Microwave sickness, for developing RFR personal protection clothes and garments and measuring devices, and for supporting EHS people all across the globe.

Since I got hurt by RFR, the industry was not idle. 3G, 4G networks have been deployed. Smartphones have become the preferred personal communication device for most people. Wireless devices become present in every household, office, public area, and even on & in people’s bodies. Smart meters were deployed across the world, and now we are facing an acceleration of this process as we go into the next stage of the wireless revolution, 5G, smart cities, and IoT.

5G, small cells, 5G phones, IoT, smart cities, and many more booming new technologies are aiming to be the next big thing, and the next money maker for this hungry, aggressive beast we got used calling ‘the wireless and cellular industry.

Since I started supporting EHS people with handling their condition, measuring RFR, reducing exposure, and using protection, I have seen waves of victims on each step the industry made. My guess is that the next year is not going to be any different and I think it is going to be even worse. than before. As with the deployment of 5G (mainly small cells) and the usage of new 5G/4G smartphones, both are developed and tested according to high non-protective standards, many more are going to experience the bad side of wireless and cellular technology. Many more are going to suffer from symptoms that come with exposure and eventually becoming fully EHS.

If the industry will continue to hide behind bad science, captive regulation agencies like the FCC and the FDA, and high non-protective, heat-based RFR standards, they will become a bigger blow to humanity than the tobacco industry was.

It is time for the industry to acknowledge the need for change. To stop thinking about the short-term profit they will make before being caught red-handed. It is time for the industry to think about how to create a better & healthier world and better products. Doing better not by deploying more lucrative products and denying any possible risk, but by acknowledging the damage it did, acknowledging the people who were hurt in the process, acknowledging the health effect of their products, infrastructure, and technologies, and by adopting new health-protective safety standards. these new better, healthier standards will allow the industry to develop, deploy, and market new wireless technologies with much lower RFR exposure and less health damage.

If the industry will continue to count on its current power, influence, advocate groups, and political lobbies to push back the science showing damage & people that were hurt by RFR exposure. If the industry will not acknowledge that RFR exposure is not healthy even at low levels, the body count will eventually turn the tides against it. When this will happen, there will not be a way back, both for the industry and for many of us.

Acknowledge the biological damage of Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) now!
Acknowledge Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity and the people who already got hurt from RFR now!
Create, adopt and support real biological health-based RFR safety standards now!
Help in the creation of a better world, and stop making people sick, all for making just another buck, selling another 5G smartphone, and installing another small cell!

The devices are small pads that should be put on the kid’s safety sit. These devices will emit a signal (bluetooth RF) when a child wight is pressuring it. The devices is coupled with a smartphone (which emit more RF radiation most of the time) or a small devices that will sound the alarm when the signal is lost.

In the last 10 years about 800 kids were left behind in cars in Israel. more then 30 cases resulted in death. Others in series injuring.

These regulations will enforce people to use RF emitting devices. What would Electromagnetic Hypersensitive people do?

The committee is expected to create a more easy to operate environment for the carriers companies to deploy their cellular 4G and 5G network in israel.

The committee is expected to allow the installation of many more 4G & 5G cellular antennas, under the title of “wireless access devices” (several antennas in a box, similar to what is called “small cells” in the USA), and by that bypassing the regional and municipal building authorities.

This will cause more people to live next to a cell tower, without anything they can do about it.

The number of people suffering from the RF radiation emitted by these towers is expected to rise as well.

What are cell tower?

A cell tower is the common name for structure with antennas that serve the cellular network. Big or small, they emit Radio Frequency(RF) Radiation 24X7.

Does the so called “safety standards” protect my health – no they don’t!

The so called safety standards, both by the FCC or ICNIRP are based on the assumption that the only possible effect of RF is heating of the tissue, which is caused only in high levels. These standards are 1000 (and more) times higher than the levels that were showed in studies across the world to cause biological changes and health effects.

In addition to the RF radiation emitted from the cell towers, it is also emitted from smartphones, smart meters, WIFI equipment, Bluetooth devices and other wireless devices. So when you use these device, even when the reception is good, you exposure yourself and other to more RF radiation (and also to more radiation from the tower).

For the RF radiation emitted from devices, such as smartphones, the so called safety standard is called “SAR”. Again it is base on the assumption that the only effect is heat, and allow very high levels of local RF exposure to be emitted from the devices and be considered “OK”.

What are the biological and health effects of RF radiation?

Biological changes are DNA damage, BBB damage, ERK creation, nerve damage and more. All are caused by non direct biological mechanisms and not and ionizing effect.

Health effect can be headaches, sleeping disorder, weakness, brain fog, memory loss and many more. In the long run , exposure to RF showed to be linked to several types of cancer. RF radiation is considered a “possible carcinogenic to humans” by the WHO’s IARC committee.

After few mouth of exposure, some people may become extremely sensitive to this radiation. This fenomena is also called EHS- Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity or Microwave Sickness. More and more people are becoming EHS , while the even existence of this sickness is being rejected by the FCC , ICNIRP and other industry influenced bodies and scientist.

Slowly the recognition of this fenomena and wide apparing new sickness is being accepted, as more and more people suffer from it, and as new studies shade light over the new condition and the biological mechanisms and health effect of RF radiation.

What to do?

It is our goal to create more awareness to the possible health effect of EMF radiation, mainly RF radiation, to EHS and to the link between the usage of RF radiation emitting devices, like smart phones and the exposure to the RF radiation. In addition to just being aware (and allowing other to become aware) we preach and practice ways and techniques to reduce exposure.

Reduce exposure

limit the use of smartphones and wireless devices – move back to wired!

• In the house and office use only corded wired phones
• Turn OFF all unnecessary transmissions in your smartphone (DATA, WIFI, BLUETOOTH, NFC and more) so the phone will radiate as less frequent as possible.
• When using the phone to talk, hold it as far as possible from your body and head.
• Use only wired earpiece/ earphones.
