Since 2010, smart meters have been installed all over the world. Some of these smart meters transmit their data using radiofrequency radiation. This type of radiation is on top of the constant low frequency magnetic and electric fields emitted from any electric meter or electric cabinet.

In this post, I will explain how to use RF protection to block most of the RF emitted from these meters, according to their location in or next to your house/apartment.

Please note that with or without protection, I recommend moving beds, desks, and sitting areas as far away as possible from the meters.

Before (and after) using protection, use your EMF meter to measure the RF and magnetic radiation.

In every case of using protection, it is recommended to ground it.

In addition to the RF, we can also use ELF magnetic protection to block the ELF magnetic field emitted from the meters, but take in mind that the distance the ELF magnetic field travels and its effect, is usually lower than the RF. So not in all cases I would use ELF protection.

I think that if you can OPTIONOUT for the smart meter, it is better to opt out than to use protection.

In all the cases below, we will try to put the protection between us and the meters.

The RF Protection

The RF protection should be installed between people, beds, sitting areas, and the meters.
The installation should be done in a way that reduces the RF levels measured across the house.
The installation should still allow the meter to transmit the data to the electric company (don’t rape it around with 100% protection).
Usually, the RF protection should be much larger than the meter itself.
The RF Protection should not cause any fire or electrocution hazards.

Materials:

For protection outside the house, I usually use a metal mosquito net. It is cheap and weather-resistant.
Using it inside the house is not recommended as it will probably add some reflections.
The net is conductive to electricity, so don’t let it touch any electric components, wires, or accessories.

For temporary (up to 3 months) in-house protection, I would use Mylar blankets
Mylar – https://www.norad4u.com/order-and-buy-emf-related-products/order-from-amazon/#Emergency_Mylar_Thermal_Blankets_Pack_of_10

For temporary (up to several years) in-house protection, I would use RF Protection Fabric like the S190
S190 – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/s190/

For permanent in-house protection, I would use RF Blocking paint, and over it RF-blocking wall paper.
Paint – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/yshield-rf-blocking-paint/
Wallpaper – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/rf-reducing-wall-paper/

The ELF protection

For ELF magnetic protection I recommend using the help of professionals. If the material used for ELF protection is made of metal, it might also block some or most of the RF (depending on it’s size).

What not to do

Don’t use protection in away that might increase the chance of fire or electrocution.

Don’t use a metal mosquito net (or other metal) inside the house as it may add reflections.

Don’t rape the meter from all sides as you will block the data transmission.

Cases:

First case – meters in a pillar outside the house

This case is relevant mostly for EHS people.

If the pillar is close to the house, there will probably be more RF entering the house, and less if the pillar is farther away.

The first step would be to use the mosquito net on the back of the pillar.

The second step would be to put a second layer of RF protection between the pillar and the house.

RF Protection installed between the smart meter pillar and the house

Second case – meters installed on one of your house’s outside walls (on the outside)

In this case, the protection is very simple. You need to put RF (and/or ELF) protection on the inside of that wall. you can use Mylar as a temp protection, RF-blocking fabric as less temp protection and RF blocking paint+wall paper as a permanent solution

meters installed on one of your house’s outside walls (on the outside)

In general, in the USA and CANADA, in the case of a privet house, usually the meter is installed on a metal box. If this the case, the metal box blocks some of the RF. Some RF will still get into the house from the sides of the box. This needs to be stopped from the inside of the house, as in the picture above. Putting protection that blocks 100% of the RF, on the box outside the house can drive more RF into the house, and I think it should not be done. In case this is a house in which people are walking around the box, in the yard/garden, some week (for example 90-80% RF Blocking) protection can be installed over the box, in order to block some of the RF and limit the exposure around the box on the outside of the house. This should be done in addition to the protection inside the house against that wall.

Third case – meters installed on one of the external walls, but inside your house

This case is more problematic as the meter is inside the house. The meter should be covered (glass, wood, plastic cover), and the RF protection should be installed on the cover.

RF Protection on smart meter installed inside the house 1

Fourth case – meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house.

This case is the most problematic. The meter is in the middle of the house.
If this is the case and you are an EHS person, I recommend moving the meter outside the house and then using protection. If you are not an EHS person, you have 2 other options:
a. Protecting the bedroom next to the meter, while leaving the kitchen and living room exposed.

RF Protection when the meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house

b. Using RF protection both on the bedroom and partially on the side of the kitchen-living room, while leaving the protection open just a little bit so the meter could still single out.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="533" src="https://www.norad4u.com/wp-content/uploads/MeterOnInternalWall2-800x533.png" alt="RF Protection when the meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house, with 2 sides protection.

This is chapter 8 of my ongoing effort to create a low EMF home office / working room. From time to time , I manage to reduce the EMF in my home office and get more time in it each day.

Since we moved into this new house, in Zichron Yaakov, Israel, I have been having some challenges with my home office room. The house itself is a low EMF house, with RF levels lower than 0.0005mW/m2. But the room which was located to be my home office has several issues that limit my ability to use it for long hours. Since we have moved in I have been finding and fixing issues (see older chapters: Chapter 7 ) and now am able to work in this room for more than 5 hours on a good day.

This week I have made several additional improvements and it is time to report all about them. All the steps I have made this week are a part of the continuous effort to minimize the EMF in the room by using fewer and fewer devices and equipment, minimalization at its best. I have moved one of my kids’ laptops out of the room, removed the WIFI/Bluetooth cards from the laptops, and removed one of the wired phones from the room.

My laptop sits along

In my home office room I used to have my own laptop, and one of my kids’ laptops. I noticed that when the other laptop is being used, even with all WIFI/BT set off and widely connected to the network, I feel worse. In addition when my kids play or work they also used to take my laptop, and I was kicked out of the room, and was left to work on a slow laptop outside my home office. So I bought a second LENOVO THINKPAD E15 laptop, and now my kids are both working on the wired laptops on the dining table and I can use the room. As it should be, since this is my room, I need my peace and quiet and I need my low EMF home office.

low EMF working room/home office

The removal of the second laptop from my home office room allows me to reduce the emission of EMI from the laptop and its power supply, keyboard, and mouse.

kids playing on wired laptops

Removing the WIFI/BT cars from the laptops

In the past few months, I have noticed that whenever the win10 operation system updates itself, the WIFI and Bluetooth cards, which I have disabled via the device manager, are back on. This results in RF transmission from the laptop, once every couple of minutes. This week it happens again and it took me 3 hours to understand why I am more restless than usual. Once I found out that once again I was exposed to RF radiation from the laptops, I decided to remove the WIFI/BT cards from the motherboard.

Removal of WIFI card from the laptop

This is something you can do yourself if you are a computer DIY or professional. Or you can ask your PC technician to do it for a small fee. Without the cards, even if the operating system will update 10000 times, the WIFI/BT cards will not be enabled back on, and will not radiate anymore. If you are an EHS person, this might be the right move for you.

One wired phone is enough

I have to corded phone line, one for the house, one for the business. I used to have two phones in the home office room, one for each. I wanted to remove one of them, so I used a small switch, and 2 phone cables to build a switch to choose between the lines. This allowed me to use one phone in the room which is less EMI, less space taken, and more comfortable.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="600" src="https://www.norad4u.com/wp-content/uploads/IMG_6906sE-800x600.jpg" alt="Corded phone, 2 lines switch, airtube earphones.

For the first time I got measurements results of Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) from Wireless LED Light Poles, 10/2021 Israel.
The results show that the light poles radiate RFR in pulses, 3-5 seconds of RFR transmission out of every 10 seconds.

Wireless street light poles started to be deployed in Israel around 2019. They are usually installed on a pole (high or low). On top of the new LED lights, there is a small “hat” which is the wireless transmitter.

The wireless led street light

Complaints without measurments

Since the deployment has started, I got several complaints from Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitive people. They all reported that they feel worse when these new wireless street lights are operating. But these complaints were not met with good RF measurements that show the RFR radiation admitted from the new street lights. I did got several measurements videos and pictures but In most cases, the person that did the measurements actually measured high background levels caused by a nearby cell tower, or by his own smartphone, and not the RFR radiation emitted by the wireless street light. This was the case until two weeks ago when I got the results of a good test. This test was done in low background levels, and clearly shows that these street lights emit RFR when they are ON.

Finally good measurements I can relay on

Two weeks ago I got detailed RFR measurements results, together with photos and video, and log files of the measurements.

The measurement was taken by a young man, that built the following setup:
1. The meter he used was the ENV RD10 (fast RFR home use meter),
2. The meter was connected to a laptop (with all transmissions turned OFF and with a special monitoring software) via a long USB cable.
3. The meter was put in a plastic cap(2) at the end of a long plastic tube(1).

4. Measurements were taken and recorded for a couple of minutes when the meter was located both next to the transmitter (3) and 2-3 meters away from it.

RFR is emitted from the wireless street lights when they are ON, at night (and not during the day when they are OFF).

The RFR is not “once in while” but a constant random burst of pulses, 1-2 seconds long, followed by a “down time” of few more seconds. In general you can say that out of 10 seconds, the signal was ON for 3-5 seconds.

The Pulses are clearly above the low background (where it is a low background), even when measured 2-3 meters away from the transmitter.

The RFR is similar in streanght to the RFR emitted from a wireless router.

The RFR remind me a bit of the RFR emitted from wireless smartmash smart meters.

RF Radiation next to the transmitted during the day

During the day the streets lights did not get electricity and were not emitting any RFR.
The measurements results show only background radiation of up to 0.0354mW/m2.

RFR levels next to the Transmitter during the night

Next to the transmitter, during the night when the lights were ON, high RFR levels were measured (higher than 1500mW/m2). Much higher than the background levels during the day and night. Based on the levels during the day, and in between pulses, It was obvious that the source is the transmitter.

A clear pattern of the transmission was not clear, but I could say that there are about 3-5 seconds with pulses every 10 seconds. It seems like the transmitted is emitting RFR for 1-2 seconds and then resting for a few seconds.

RFR levels 2-3 meters bellow the transmitter

2-3 meters below the transmitter, the RFR pulses were still clear. Their level was between 0.2-0.6mW/m2. These levels are high enough to cause symptoms in EHS people.

RFR levels 2 meters from the transmitter during the night

Result summary

Not “Once a Day”

From these test results, it is clear the transmitter is emitting RFR all the time the light is ON, and not “Once a Day” as was suggested before. I could not see any clear pattern but it remind me of the way smart-mesh smart-meters emit RFR.

The transmission is clear above the background level

In contrary to past attempts to measure this, this time the transmission is clear above the low background level in this village. It is easy to see the difference between the pulses and the low background levels when the meter was next to the transmitter and also when it was 2-3 meters away.

RFR levels 2 meters from the transmitter during the night

The RFR reach the street level, and nearby houses, EHS people might be affected by it

The level that was measured 2-3 meters away from the transmitter is high enough to cause symptoms in some EHS people. EHS people that walk below these light poles or live right next to them (less than 5 meters) might be affected by this radiation. It is possible that at least part of the complaints I got in the past year about symptoms at night from these wireless street light pols, were caused by these wireless LED light poles.

Not Healty

Other than the possible effect this extra exposure might cause on EHS people, even that is low, this addition to the RFR exposure is not healthy for everyone. The deployment of these wireless LED street lights, will add more RFR to the environment. Try to imagine a small WIFI router on top of every one of these poles.

What can be done?

Measure and see if RFR is entering your house from these wireless LED lights at night.

Use RFR protection over the house.

Ask the local autoroties for explanastion why there is a constant burst of puleses and not just one pules evey few minutes, hours, or twice a day.

Ask the local autoroties if the transmitter on the wireless LED light close to your house, could be turned OFF.

Take this into considuration when searching a new house to live in.

Test Protocol

Find a low, easy to reach, wireless LED light, in an erea with a low RFR backgound.

Don’t try to clime the pole.

Don’t get close to electric wires.

Don’t try to make this measurment unless you are preofessionals in the feild of electricity and electronics.

You can use a plastic pole, or a wooden stick, with a plastic cap on the top, that will hold the meter.

Use a fast RFR meter with USB connection (CORNET ED88TPLUS and ENV RD10 are sutiable).
Use the meters with a long USB cable, and a laptop (with all RFR turned OFF) that runs the monitoring softaware avialible on the meters products’ page.

Meassure the RFR Few meters from the wireless LED lights, or when it is not working, to get the referance background levels.

Measure the RFR for about 20 seconds, when the meter is in diffrent distances from the wireless led light transmitter, right next to the transmitter, 50cm away from it, 1 meter, 2 meters, 5 meters.

If you don’t have an easy and safe aproch to the transmitter, measure in the place you are, on the ground, in the window, on the porch, yeard and so on.

Try to compeare the deferent measurments you took, to find a patern in the transmittion, if any, and see the levels of the pulses (if any). Try to identefy if the tranmitter on top of the LED light is actulay transmitting, when, for how log, how strong and how far the RFR is still noticialbe.
