Since 2010, smart meters have been installed all over the world. Some of these smart meters transmit their data using radiofrequency radiation. This type of radiation is on top of the constant low frequency magnetic and electric fields emitted from any electric meter or electric cabinet.

In this post, I will explain how to use RF protection to block most of the RF emitted from these meters, according to their location in or next to your house/apartment.

Please note that with or without protection, I recommend moving beds, desks, and sitting areas as far away as possible from the meters.

Before (and after) using protection, use your EMF meter to measure the RF and magnetic radiation.

In every case of using protection, it is recommended to ground it.

In addition to the RF, we can also use ELF magnetic protection to block the ELF magnetic field emitted from the meters, but take in mind that the distance the ELF magnetic field travels and its effect, is usually lower than the RF. So not in all cases I would use ELF protection.

I think that if you can OPTIONOUT for the smart meter, it is better to opt out than to use protection.

In all the cases below, we will try to put the protection between us and the meters.

The RF Protection

The RF protection should be installed between people, beds, sitting areas, and the meters.
The installation should be done in a way that reduces the RF levels measured across the house.
The installation should still allow the meter to transmit the data to the electric company (don’t rape it around with 100% protection).
Usually, the RF protection should be much larger than the meter itself.
The RF Protection should not cause any fire or electrocution hazards.

Materials:

For protection outside the house, I usually use a metal mosquito net. It is cheap and weather-resistant.
Using it inside the house is not recommended as it will probably add some reflections.
The net is conductive to electricity, so don’t let it touch any electric components, wires, or accessories.

For temporary (up to 3 months) in-house protection, I would use Mylar blankets
Mylar – https://www.norad4u.com/order-and-buy-emf-related-products/order-from-amazon/#Emergency_Mylar_Thermal_Blankets_Pack_of_10

For temporary (up to several years) in-house protection, I would use RF Protection Fabric like the S190
S190 – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/s190/

For permanent in-house protection, I would use RF Blocking paint, and over it RF-blocking wall paper.
Paint – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/yshield-rf-blocking-paint/
Wallpaper – https://www.4ehsbyehs.com/product/rf-reducing-wall-paper/

The ELF protection

For ELF magnetic protection I recommend using the help of professionals. If the material used for ELF protection is made of metal, it might also block some or most of the RF (depending on it’s size).

What not to do

Don’t use protection in away that might increase the chance of fire or electrocution.

Don’t use a metal mosquito net (or other metal) inside the house as it may add reflections.

Don’t rape the meter from all sides as you will block the data transmission.

Cases:

First case – meters in a pillar outside the house

This case is relevant mostly for EHS people.

If the pillar is close to the house, there will probably be more RF entering the house, and less if the pillar is farther away.

The first step would be to use the mosquito net on the back of the pillar.

The second step would be to put a second layer of RF protection between the pillar and the house.

RF Protection installed between the smart meter pillar and the house

Second case – meters installed on one of your house’s outside walls (on the outside)

In this case, the protection is very simple. You need to put RF (and/or ELF) protection on the inside of that wall. you can use Mylar as a temp protection, RF-blocking fabric as less temp protection and RF blocking paint+wall paper as a permanent solution

meters installed on one of your house’s outside walls (on the outside)

In general, in the USA and CANADA, in the case of a privet house, usually the meter is installed on a metal box. If this the case, the metal box blocks some of the RF. Some RF will still get into the house from the sides of the box. This needs to be stopped from the inside of the house, as in the picture above. Putting protection that blocks 100% of the RF, on the box outside the house can drive more RF into the house, and I think it should not be done. In case this is a house in which people are walking around the box, in the yard/garden, some week (for example 90-80% RF Blocking) protection can be installed over the box, in order to block some of the RF and limit the exposure around the box on the outside of the house. This should be done in addition to the protection inside the house against that wall.

Third case – meters installed on one of the external walls, but inside your house

This case is more problematic as the meter is inside the house. The meter should be covered (glass, wood, plastic cover), and the RF protection should be installed on the cover.

RF Protection on smart meter installed inside the house 1

Fourth case – meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house.

This case is the most problematic. The meter is in the middle of the house.
If this is the case and you are an EHS person, I recommend moving the meter outside the house and then using protection. If you are not an EHS person, you have 2 other options:
a. Protecting the bedroom next to the meter, while leaving the kitchen and living room exposed.

RF Protection when the meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house

b. Using RF protection both on the bedroom and partially on the side of the kitchen-living room, while leaving the protection open just a little bit so the meter could still single out.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="533" src="https://www.norad4u.com/wp-content/uploads/MeterOnInternalWall2-800x533.png" alt="RF Protection when the meter is installed on an internal wall inside your house, with 2 sides protection.
Israeli Electric Company will install 1000000 smart radiating meters around Israel in the next 5 years. The meters will have a 4G\LTE modem. In buildings that have pure cellular reception, additional small cellular amplifiers will be installed. The meters will be installed in households across the country. The number of transmissions, intervals, and total time or radiation exposure from the meter is still unknown.

At 2017 the company started to install 200000 smart meters with PLC technology, which does not emit RF radiation. These meters were installed in all the buildings in Modein, and new buildings in Jerusalem, Natanya, and Ber-Sheva.

At 2010 Smart mesh RF emitting smart meters were installed in some of the kibbutz in Israel by privet companies, and in Hadar-Yosef in Tel Aviv (pilot) by the Israel Electric company.

The move from PLC to Cellular 4G/LTE meters, will expose more people to more RF radiation. I am certain more people will become EHS, as was the case in the USA, Canada, and other countries that used cellular and Smart-Mesh electric meters.
